Our History

Bisou Bisou began in the summer of 2012  as an initiative to create a safe space for the students in Kafou Fey to study for the Haitian BACC exam. Since then, our programs have increased to better serve the needs of our members. University students formed a council to oversee the programming and supervise the study sessions frequented by secondary school students. Our secondary school students organize events and homework help sessions for the neighborhoods’ youth. Today, the Kafou Fey campus is supported by a committee of local professionals who manage the site and oversee the student council. In the summer of 2013, we began our cultural exchange program, inviting international students and professionals to host seminars while learning Kreyol and experiencing Haitian culture in exchange. Over 30 volunteers have participated in this program to date. Bisou Bisou Haiti is a 501(c)3 organization.make changes to the font.

Moving forward: The Future of Bisou Bisou

Since its start in 2012, Bisou Bisou Haiti has reached an average of over 200 students per year in various locations and events, encouraging them to engage in productive, educational and recreational activities. Through experience, we have learned that students appreciate access to educational tools and self development opportunities. During town hall style meetings held in the winter of 2018, it became clear that the local community required more than the current programs. They wanted a Community Center that fosters healthy community interaction, creativity, collaboration, and stability in times of political chaos. Above all, they universally expressed a desire for the Center to be governed by, and responsible to, the local community. It's time to build on our success and apply a sustainable model so that more students are able to access basic resources in more neighborhoods.
